Tuesday Teamie

I am constantly admiring the jewelry and shop of this week's featured Teamie. This artist not only creates beautiful "timeless, modern" jewelry, the presentation of her work is impeccable!  And her distinct style makes her work easily recognizable.

Did you guess? Our Tuesday Teamie is Sheri of sheriberyl.  Now, let's interview Sherri and get to know her better!

K:  Tell us how you got started as a jewelry artist, Sheri.

Sheri: A friend gave me the opportunity to have an accessory and jewelry concession in their store two years ago. At that time I was shopping the world for product and purchasing others work. Little by little I started putting in my earrings and watched them sell!  Last year I went to Otis College of Design and took some extension classes in metal smithing. I wanted to learn the tools to realize ideas that I had and do other things. Now I have an entire case line that I have to fill so I have branched out to more categories.

K:  What do you enjoy most about your art?

Sheri:  It would have to be the actual creative process, working with my hands, sitting with different materials and putting them together realizing an idea. Sometimes I don’t have a clear vision of what I am going to do and see where the process takes me.

K:  Your designs are very unique. What inspires your creations?

Sheri:  Thank you! A lot has to do with my own personal style. I design for myself and what I would wear and hope others appreciate it as well. I am very much a minimal modernist. I do derive inspiration from other artists, past and present and different eras. My style is very simple and clean so I also look to natural shapes for inspiration. Sometimes it is the material it self that sparks an idea. What can I do with these?

K:  You have a very distinct personal style. What tips do you have for others trying to develop their own style?

Sheri:  We all have one. We just need to identify it and develop a signature look through presentation and photos. Also keeping things consistent is important in reinforcing that. Visit some of the shops here in our team and you can see what I mean.

K:  Your work is beautifully photographed. Any tips for photographing jewelry?

Sheri:  I am a graduate of the photography school for dummies. Basically I have learned by trial and error. I wish I had a screen shot of what my shop looked like when I first opened. Here is an example of how my things were “staged” and presented originally.  A friend of mine who is an art director said, "it is a nice image but you really don’t see the jewelry,  focus on the pieces." That was my Ah Ha moment.

I have a little Canon powershot camera. I take my shots indoors in natural light using the micro setting on white or tinted paper. I always try and position the piece in the shot and frame rather than in the editing phase. I stage the pieces and try to be consistent in how they are laid out. I take very close up shots from various angles and depth of field. One of these days I will get around to building a light box but I am fortunate to have great indoor natural light most of the time.

I use Picmonkey to size and crop the shots and do any touch ups and fotofuze my grounds. I try and get all my images to look the same size to have more consistency in my shop. A trick I find is to hit crop, square, and then center it over the image. That way I usually get all of my shots to be the same size . One of the best tips that I learned was to look at images in search for your category and see what images jump off the page at you. Then ask yourself what about the image made you look or why you were attracted to it.

K:  What is the most important thing you have learned about being an Etsy business owner?

Sheri:  SEO…….. Hah!, and visual presentation. Internet selling was something totally new and foreign to me. This is my first foray into it. I had a lot of prior retail experience so this is just a different platform where you have to romance and make your product enticing for someone who can not touch and feel or try it on.

K:  From your forum posts, it is evident you are taking a positive approach to upcoming changes to the Etsy venue. Will you share your thoughts on the subject?

Sheri:  I am a newcomer to Etsy, joined prior to Baligate, and came along when the company is shape shifting. My life of late has been all about change which hasn’t always come easy but I have learned to embrace it. So here is my perspective. Etsy has 15 million members many of which are buyers that just registered for the first time to make a purchase. They don’t break out the statistics into buyer/seller so even if it is 60/40 buyers to sellers that is a few million buyers in this global economy. A shot in the proverbial bucket. I didn’t even know of Etsy’s existence until 2 years ago when one of my employees mentioned it to me. Now that I am a seller not one person in my sphere of friends & colleagues knew about it either.

I see some of the changes that are potentially in the works as bringing in more buyers to the site. Esty advertising and getting the word out is HUGE, having them pay for Google shopping another huge investment for individual sellers. This all comes at a price. The Etsy community is as diverse as main street America and the battle between big box and mom and pop stores. I understand the concerns of many that the company was built on the backs of handmade and see many of these potential changes as a tectonic shift, a sell out. Many had specific reasons for coming to this specific site and I respect that.

When you look at some of the top performing revenue shops on the site they are suppliers not handmade. I think that there are those that will continue to seek out unique handmade crafted product. And find those artisans that supply it. So I am going to wait and see how things play out.

Incorporating wholesale into the platform will give additional exposure to Etsy and for those who qualify, want to expand and are able to.  I also think that these wholesale buyers will also spill over to the general site as well.

This has been a great learning experience for me. I couldn’t have done it so quickly without this platform. Where else would you have all of these tools and support mechanisms available to help you succeed? Not to mention the support of the various teams. I think that we all need to stay calm and see what changes are actually going to be enacted and then make informed decisions for our business.

K:  Thanks Sheri for talking with the team today. It was much enjoyed, and congratulations on this week's well-deserved feature!

TUESDAY TEAMIE

Our Tuesday Teamie this week features a new member to our team. Her name is Micaela and her shop is foundationcreations (True Foundation Creations.) Here is how she introduced herself to the team:

Hi everyone, My name is Micaela! I'm the owner, maker and designer of True Foundation Creations! I'm a high school home school senior and have been an avid crafter for as long as I can remember!
I live in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where I work with my sister capturing the happiest moments of people’s lives! From weddings to newborns, seniors and families... photography keeps me very busy, but I always enjoy every minute of it!
I’m a crafter, a painter, a photographer and a blogger… I love to sing, smile, laugh and make pretty things. My sister once told me that “to describe my personality by a color from a box of crayons would be impossible, because,” as she said “I’m the whole box!”
I think that pretty much describes my crafting too… most crafters like to pick one or two things and focus on that, but for me, I like to learn and do as much crafting as possible! From Crocheting, to basket weaving, candle dipping, cross stitching, embroidery, painting, jewelry making, photography, knitting, pottery, paper making, sewing, glass cutting, stamp carving and quilting… just to name a few ;)
I started my etsy shop July 24 of 2012...so not too long ago... I am enjoying every minute owning an etsy shop and love the encouragement that all my fellow etsy shop owners have given me!
I’m so excited about joining this team and can't wait to start meeting you all! :D

I don't know about you, but I find Micaela to be an inspiration, and her enthusiasm infectious! Let's all give Micaela a big welcome today and promote her shop via pin, tweet, post! We welcome you to the team, Micaela, and wish you much Etsy success!

Tuesday Teamie

Today's Tuesday Teamie is someone we all know and love. And although he will probably not be happy to be in the spotlight, he certainly deserves the recognition!

Besides impeccable craftmanship with his beautiful leather work, he is a delight to know, has a great sense of humor, and is a very caring, sincere and honest man. If you know him, you have guessed by now that our Tuesday Teamie is

From Greg's About Page:

Creating to fill a need and the need to create.

I'm a mason by trade but have many interests which I often feel are impinged on by my real job. The downturn in the economy in recent years brought the construction industry to a virtual halt and my regular job became an irregular job. My foray into the world of Etsy is the result.

My first attempt at working with leather was a number of years ago when I desperately needed a new tool bag for my masonry tools. Masons' tool bags are traditionally made of canvas with a leather bottom. The one I made was all leather with external slide-in pockets for a two foot level and brick spacing rulers. My self taught endeavors in leatherwork expanded as coworkers' requests and my own needs inspired further attempts at designing and constructing a variety of functional leather goods.

I am driven by the need to create and there is nothing more fulfilling than when my creations are desired and appreciated.

Tuesday Teamie

Today's Tuesday Teamie is..................................

Joanna Alley of Glass Goddess Ngraving.

From Joanna's Profile (photos added):
YES, you really can put "anything" on glass. From pictures of family, nature, poems and quotes to scenes of fantasy and dream. It's what engraving is all about! We LOVE custom orders!! YES WE DO PORTRAITS! Just send a convo or email and let us know how we can help you.
Hello, yes I am new to Etsy! After being berated for my family for awhile now I decided to let my engraving out to see the world. I am a mother of 5, homeschool 4, and in what spare time I do have, I paint, draw, and engrave glass and crystal. I have been engraving since 2009. Each piece you see is engraved by hand, every line like a brushstroke. The use of power tools really allows me to throw an artistic fit, when the pressures of life get to me.

My teenagers are already talented engravers and I am sure they will find their way to Etsy in the future. You will occasionally see me and the kids at local festivals and fairs. This really is a great love of ours. I was a children's clown for 13 years before passing the suit down to my daughter, the lovely Sprinkles. I still facepaint for all of her shows and events.
We have also started to take the glass on a few trips. The reactions are amazing. So many pieces finding loving homes. If my local customers find their way here please add me to your circle.

A bit about drill engraving:

Drill engraving involves the use of micro motor drills, or flex drive drills depending on engraving depth and the hardness of the glass. Instead of prefabricated stencils, the drill engraver must carve out each line or area of shading, much like painting or drawing. Yes we do all of this while wearing particle masks and magnifying glasses (a cute look for any lady). The result is permanant, and like a painting, a one of a kind piece of art. Glass and crystal can have widely varied looks, and prices.

You can find me on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/TheGlassgoddess; please bear with me as we are still under construction.

Feel free to pin me!

Tuesday Teamie

Our Tuesday Teamie is Caitlin Sainio of  Caitlin Sainio Designs. Her beautiful crochet leaf appliques were voted team favorite in our Falling for Fall Challenge! Congratulations Caitlin!

Let's meet our Tuesday Teamie as she describes the love of her art:

From Caitlin's About Page:

From thread to lace.... in as many colors as possible.

I learned to crochet as a child, and fell hopelessly in love with thread crochet shortly thereafter. To this day, I find the process magical. I love how the thread feels, as it slides between my fingers. I love to watch the hook flash in and out, creating tiny patterns of knots. And most of all, I love watching those patterns turn into the curve of a petal, the wing of a butterfly, or the crystalline point of a snowflake.

Caitlin Sainio Designs began in 2009 as an excuse to buy more thread and make more lace. Even as it's grown into a successful business, the core mission is the same: it's a place to indulge -- and to share -- my fascination with crochet, with geometry, and with nature.

TUESDAY TEAMIE

Today's Tuesday Teamie features one of our most dedicated team members. She is the most energetic go-getter I've ever met! You put forth a challenge, she is there. You put forth a call for volunteers, she is there. And the lady accomplishes more in an hour than I do in a week!

You will find her in the forums daily - putting forth challenges, interacting with other members, answering questions, asking questions. And I haven't done a count, but she has probably created more treasuries than all other members put together!

She is honest and straightforward, and dare I say - feisty! And she loves, loves, loves vintage fabric!

Today's Tuesday Teamie is April Joyce of Alabaster, Alabama USA, and her shop is Beasewn. April creates beautifully sewn handtowels, aprons and other goodies from vintage fabrics. And if you need something she doesn't have in her shop, she will probably create it for you. I asked for fabric rug yarn and voila! Next day, there it was! Big, beautiful rolls of fabric yarn - made, photographed, up and listed in her shop.

April recently became a Team Leader and is now our Forum Director and Moderator. She is doing an amazing job!

If you haven't already --- meet April:

From April's About Page (photos added):

All about BeaSewn

April Joyce
owner, designer, Queen Bee
My name is April and I live in the heart of bama with my husband, teenagers and an assortment of cats and dogs. I have always had my hand in some sort or craft or dirt or other. I have crocheted, gardened, made jewelry, dabbled in polymer and I even spent some time on embroidery last spring- but I always wanted to sew.
A few years back I bought a bottom of the line sewing machine. It was always snarling, breaking and I wasn't good at it- Its easy to give up when you spend most of your time cursing your machine that never works right. Give up I did- for almost two years.
My new years resolution this year was LEARN TO SEW! And learn I did. My husband surprised me on my birthday in January with a Delightful Babylock grace machine and a proper sewing table to go with it...From there it snowballed. turns out all I needed was a lot of patience, and something to work with.

I play with all kinds of fabrics- but vintage is my favorite. I can simply not stay out of the fabric stores. With lots of fabric, brings lots of projects. Naturally when things began to pile up I needed a place to sell it. That's how I came to land on Etsy.

I create Aprons,Tea Towels from vintage fabric and the occasional surprise and supply. I never know what I am going to make when I come into my sewing room in the morning- but I always have fun doing it. Lately I have been dabbling in little girls dresses!needle books, hanging towels and kitchen accessories. They aren't etsy ready just yet.
Looking through pinterest and seeing fabric collections made me want to hoard too, off I went. I am collecting fabric every week- sometimes more than once. I love it. Somehow the old and beautiful speaks to me.
Hobby lobby trim sales have been another downfall- I need a bigger room! I live by,if it speaks to you,buy it,something lovely will happen.
Of course you need a dress form- so another corner goes,And more fabric storage, and something pretty to put on the walls. Now I am surrounded by things that make me happy. I'm always picking up this or that to sit around.
Every day I am gathering, perfecting, creating, rearranging and designing something. I love what I do so much I have to drag myself away each night.
I hope you love and enjoy what I create as much as I enjoy creating it.

Besides her shop, you can visit April at her Facebook Page or her Shop Blog.  Everybody stop by her shop today and say hi!
